According to the AusPlay Australian sport and physical activity participation survey there is a distinct drop off in participation rates in team sports from 15-17 year old to 18-24 year old.
While most transition away from organised sport for social motivations, many are forced out of the game due to persistent injury which may be preventable with the introduction of sports insoles.
A cross-sectional study on foot loading patterns in elite soccer players of different ages was conducted in Germany in 2020 and published in the Journal of Back & Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation 2020, Vol. 33 Issue 6, p939.
This study assessed whether the alterations in plantar loading patterns are risk factors for stress injuries of the lower limb, particularly of the foot and ankle.
The aim of the study was to assess the plantar pressure distributions of members of four high-level soccer teams of different age groups to identify age-related differences in loading patterns.
The four groups tested were:
- 17 professional football players with a mean age of 23 years old from the 1st team squad
- 14 players from the U21 squad
- 15 players from the U17 squad
- 19 players from the U16 squad
The results were that in contrast to adult elite soccer players, adolescents demonstrate asymmetric foot loading patterns with increased peak loads in the lateral aspects of the nonpreferred foot. The results may provide some explanation for stress fractures that occur in elite adolescents.
In order to counterbalance this foot loading pattern, orthotic insoles placed inside football boots can help to prevent injury and ease pain from overuse.
